Lost Season 3 Episode 20 - The Man Behind the Curtain Review

*SPOILERS* Be warned, the following posts contains spoilers about Lost
Then we see Mikhail again, running through the forest and bursting in to the others camp. Ben, like we did a while back, thought Mikhail was dead and seemed mildly surprised to see him. However, this time we got an explanation. Nothing extraordinary - there was a simple and easily explained reason for him being alive. The barrier was merely set to something below lethal, and so while it must have still been painful it wasn’t near as bad as it appeared.
Now that his sudden return had been explained, Mikhail told everything about Naomi and the ship she was on. Ben said it would all get taken care of when the others raid the beach in two days, but Mikhail wants to go now. Before they can reach decision however, Locke decides for them, telling everyone that they cannot go because he and Ben have an appointment with Jacob. Everyone is suddenly silent, with stunned looks on their faces. Looking at Ben, it would seem that he did not want people to know that. He then says that trip will have to wait, the raid will happen now. Unsatisfied, Locke decides to take measures into his own hands, and attacks Mikhail. It’s only the second time we’ve seen Mikhail in a while, and it’s also the second time we’ve seen him get easily destroyed by an eager attacker. He sends fists into his face while all the others look on contentedly, with the exception of Ben who shouts for them to stop. Locke finally does, and Ben has no choice but to take Locke after all. Before they leave however, Rousseau’s daughter gives Locke a gun, telling him he will need it.
They get going, and Ben once again tries to dissuade Locke, telling him that Jacob is real and he will be very angry if they show up. He summons you, and not the other way around. Locke won’t change his mind though, and so they get on their way. After a trek through the jungle, they finally arrive at Jacob’s house - but before they enter, Ben asks Locke to turn off his flash light because Jacob hates technology. He lights up a lamp to take it’s place, and tries one last time to change Locke’s mind, warning him that after this, there is no turning back. Locke of course wants to go forward, and they finally enter the house. Ben walks in, and begins to talk. However, there is no one there. He is talking to something that is in a chair - the only problem is that all the fills that chair is an empty void. Locke thinks he is crazy and pathetic, because even his convincing acting isn’t enough to make something that isn’t there appear. Ben says there is definitely someone there, but besides his word everything points to it being nothing more than an empty chair, so Locke decides to leave.
He is almost out the door when something turns him right back around - a voice saying only “Help Me.” It is not Ben, so Locke turns his flash light on too look around despite Ben’s previous warning. It is immediately apparent that is a mistake - there is sudden movement, things are being smashed, there is chaos everywhere, and someone is going crazy. It is not Locke or Ben though, but someone else. If this turns out to be what it so far looks like, it will be one of the greatest “what the fuck” moments since Lost began. It seems hard to believe that this is really what it looks like, but if so this could change so much and opens up a whole new sea of questions.
Locke runs out, and shortly after Ben follows. Even after (what appears to be) Jacob’s supernatural show, Locke refuses to believe he is real, or is just in denial over what he has bear witness to. Ben says that it is real, and while he has told lies this is not one of them. He tells Locke that he wasn’t actually born on the island, and wants to show him something. He leads him to a pit filled with skeletons, the last remains of the Dharma Initiative workers. He explains what the situation was like, and it sounds similar to that of the others and the survivors. He says that one side had to go, and he was smart enough to choose the winning side. He tells Locke that he was not smart enough to make the decision, and even though Locke begins to pull out his gun Ben is faster. He shoots Locke straight in the chest, propelling him into the hole. Ben says he did this because Locke heard Jacob, and he needs to know what he said. Locke tells him, and Ben leaves Locke alone to die in the hole.
Locke is a central and very important character, not to mention one that many fans love. His death would be the most monumental one yet. He could still be found, but that isn’t too likely - we’ll probably find out next episode if he is gone for sure. Personally I think he is.
While the meeting with Jacob and Ben shooting Locke were by far the biggest events of this episode, other stuff did happen. Back on the beach, Sawyer returned, and broke the news about Juliet being a mole. However, she is gone, along with Jack. Since there is nothing more they can do until she returns, Sayid tells the rest of the survivors about Naomi. While they are discussing this, Jack returns with Juliet in tow. Sawyer confronts him, and it looked like they could have easily gotten into a fight. That’s what I was hoping for, but unfortunately they stick to words. Sawyer plays the tape, and when it is over Juliet tells him to turn it over. They listen to the other side, and it is a recording of Juliet talking talking about the upcoming raid.
Before Sawyer can get even angrier though, Jack reveals that Juliet had already told him, and so wasn’t going to go through with the plan. He waited until now to tell them because he didn’t know what to do about it - but now he does. We’ll have to wait another week to find out exactly what he has in mind, but I think the all out confrontation with the others that was brought up all the way back in Season 2 may finally be coming.
His dad’s a dick though, because he always forgets his son’s birthday and blames him for his wife’s death. It’s too much for Ben, so he joins the “Hostiles,” and kills his father while they massacre the rest of the Initiative. He had to do the same thing as Locke, but actually succeeds.
His father is left alone in his bus, and that’s how Hurley found it, beer and all.
This was an amazing episode, so much was revealed and the flashbacks were actually really interesting. The finale is fast approaching, and so the next few weeks will continue to be amazing. I honestly think this is one of the best times for Lost, even as good as parts of Season 1.
