Lost Season 3 Episode 18 - D.O.C. Review

*SPOILERS* Be warned, the following posts contains spoilers about Lost
The Island:
The episode began with Sun in her favorite place, the garden. And no scene of Sun in her garden is complete without menacing music, and her being frightened by an approaching person/animal through the bushes. This time it was Jack, coming to check on her pregnancy. Because of his questions, she became curious, and went to Juliet for answers. And for once, Juliet actually gave them - leading her into the jungle to the abandoned medical hatch. There, we finally find the truth behind a question that was brought up so long ago. Sun’s pregnancy was until now a mystery, and by finding Sun’s date of conception we find out that Jin is in fact the father. While he was infertile, he knocked her up anyway - either because of the island’s healing powers, or because of the fact that men on the island produce 5 times as much sperm. Chances are they are related, but either way I really didn’t need to know the details of what goes on in the balls of the survivors.
Even though Juliet helps Sun, she is still working for the others. As soon as she catches a moment alone, she records a message about her tests on Sun, and reveals that she is trying to get samples of the other females. She didn’t give any details on how she hopes to accomplish this, but I am hoping it leads to a lesbian “interaction” between her and Kate. We already got a taste of this, and I know it seems far fetched that obtaining a sample could lead to it, but I’ll take Kate without clothes whenever I can.
Then there was the part that last episode ended with - an unidentified woman arriving on the island. At first the woman only spoke in another language, and they had trouble understanding her. That wasn’t the most important part though - her lung was punctured by a branch, and she was dying. She probably would have died, if someone hadn’t showed up and saved her. The person happened to be an other, Mikhail, which if you remember was last seen dying at the hands of the sonic defense barrier. Or at least it appeared he was dying, but he is obviously very much alive. He managed to patch her lung, and after trying and failing to get away with the radio he was back in the jungle again. There was no explanation to his return, and there probably won’t be for at least a couple episodes.
While his return was puzzling, it still wasn’t near the most shocking event of the episode. As always, that was reserved for the end. Hurley is watching the woman who just recently arrived, when she speaks in English for the first time. The shocking part was what she said though - when Hurley told her they were survivors from Oceanic Flight 815, she informed him that was impossible. According to her, the remains of that flight were recovered, and all passengers were dead. Assuming this is true, it is one of the biggest, most unexpected, and most important moments of Lost.
We have seen lots of footage from outside and inside the plane as it crashed, along with the videos in the communication station, so we know it actually happened. But is the whole thing a set up, and they were intentionally sent to the island for whatever purpose? Or could the recovered remains that were found have been set up, so that no one would come looking for the survivors? Or is it something completely different? This could potentially change everything, and brings up so many new questions.
While some of what happened on the island was only important in small ways, a lot of it was very important. Someone who appeared dead was instead alive, and the whole foundation of what the survivors believe was shaken considerably.
The Flashbacks:
Jin and Sun’s flashbacks usually aren’t that interesting, and this was no exception. However, it wasn’t just filler. We learned about Jin’s parents, and while we knew his father was a fisherman it seems that was nothing compared to what his mother was - a prostitute. Even Jin doesn’t know this though, and it doesn’t look like Sun’s going to tell him. She paid his mother not to reveal it, and the money was her father’s. That’s why Jin started working directly under Mr. Paik, to pay off a debt he didn’t even know about. Aside from that, nothing much happened.
Overall, this episode was pretty good. There were some parts that could have moved faster, and I could have done without the flashbacks, but the great parts of the episode made up for the rest. Just the ending alone would have made this a decent episode, and along with Mikhail’s return it was definitely a solid addition.

“Lesbian ‘interaction’”? Hilarious. Naturally, I was thinking the same thing.
