The 4 Worst Web Advertising Techniques

You know how it goes: You’re busy surfing the web, when suddenly your peaceful experience is interrupted by an obtrusive ad for something you obviously don’t want. Or maybe you do, and are tempted to take the offer for once, but know it will only end up to be a scam like so many others. Either way, you probably wish it would get out of your face and let you read what you want. While ads in websites have almost become a way of life and I don’t have a problem with them, there are some that are too much and stop you from doing what you’re trying to do. Presented below, the 4 worst web advertising techniques.

Text Links
I’m talking about when a post is filled with advertising links. If the ad is on the side out of my way it’s fine, but when it’s mixed in with the content and the other links it’s worse. Sure, the links are different colors, but a website’s content and it’s advertising shouldn’t be mixed more than necessary. Plus, if your pointer strays over them a box pops up, blocking your view of what you were reading. These aren’t nearly as bad as most of the others, but they are still much more annoying than ads should be.

Skip This Ad
Someone should be grateful that you’re visiting their site at all, and at most hoping you’ll click their ads - not forcing you to view them before doing anything else. Some sites take you to the page of an advertiser though, and then after you’ve seen that you get to whichever page you were originally headed to. This means you end up wasting much more time when visiting their site. Considering most have a link to “Skip This Ad,” I doubt the ad even gets many clicks or leaves much of an impression (at least not a positive one).

Pop ups
There are a few different variations on pop ups. The most frequently seen is when a new window with the ad opens up. All you have to do is close it, but it’s annoying nonetheless.
Then there are the ones that are built into the website, and so it’s not as simple as closing a window. Instead of opening a new window they open a square in the middle of the page that blocks everything. Each one might be closed differently, and some smaller ones follow you as you scroll which makes it even worse. These tend to jut out right in the important parts of the page, and so are difficult to ignore.

Ads with Noise
These are the worst. Most ads can be disabled by one click or just ignored, but these aren’t avoided that easy. While you can of course mute your computer, you shouldn’t have to do that to view a website (Well, with the exception of Porn). Countless times I’ve had multiple tabs or windows open when I start to hear an obnoxious noise, and have to hunt through to find where the problem is. If you’re trying to watch a video or listen to something than these ads are very distracting, as if flashing pictures and the like wasn’t already bad enough.
Luckily, you’ll hardly ever see a pop up in many browsers because they block them, and it’s pretty easy to get rid of other ads too. Still, ads shouldn’t be such an annoyance, especially when they’re in the way of the website as much as they’re in the way of the reader. Hopefully people will realize it and stick to the better, less obtrusive, and probably more effective ones. It would be doing everyone a favor.

#2…the ones that pop up from within the page are the biggest pain in the ass. But you are absolutely correct that ads with noise are fucking annoying.

Usually you have to actually interact with the ad to turn off the noise though, whereas with the others there is a button that closes them. And one of the big reason it’s #1: The mosquito ad that constantly buzzes. Seriously, I fucking hate that.

I hate the one where the guy comes to your house, starts talking about interest free mortgage rates or a bigger penis size, and won’t go away until you touch the hand-drawn ‘X’ on his forehead.

I’m with you zizzy. I especially hate the Flash pop-ups that go through their mandatory animation before they even give you the option to close them. But the sound ads are the worst. Number one!
